Publishing Division.
His Gig:
Mico is an editor in the book publishing division at
National Geographic.
Career Path:
From my earlier teaching experience, educational
publishing is a natural extension from teaching. He taught for
eight years, and has been in educational publishing for almost 20
years. I have worked for varieties of companies large and
small. There are so many constant ownership changes in publishing
that one must be flexible. I like variety so I welcome change
and new challenges. His first big break was when he joined
a small startup company about five years ago. It was very
successful, then it sold to a large corporation.
A
Day in the Life Of:
Biggest challenge is to find time to do concentrated
work most of the day is filled with meetings and interruptions finding
time to concentrate on one issue is difficult. Mico works
about 9 - 10 hours a day.
High
Five:
The creative product planning aspect, problem
solving, working with a team of people.
Down Low:
The numerous and diverse objectives
I have to keep a lot of balls up in the air.
Extras:
When hes not working Mico likes to read,
swim, dine out and do fun outdoor activities.
Words from the Wise:
Be flexible and try new positions. Most careers
are not linear. The most interesting career is one with lots of
different options and aspects. Never turn down an opportunity
to learn or try something different.
